The Still Life and Game series by Jeff Robb takes inspiration from the opulent still-life paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, where artists like Frans Snyders and Jan Fyt used the depiction of game, flowers, and food to explore themes of abundance and the fragility of life. Through the medium of lenticular photography, Robb reimagines these rich, symbolic compositions, giving them a modern, three-dimensional presence.
To bring this vision to life, Robb worked with expert florists Augustus Bloom and Gail Smith, the latter known for her work creating floral arrangements for the National Gallery. Together, they painstakingly recreated the elaborate arrangements typical of the era, incorporating flowers and plants available in March to reflect seasonal authenticity. Game animals such as hares, pheasants, and ducks, frequently featured in the works of Jan Weenix and other masters, are included alongside an array of fruits, vegetables, and wildflowers. Every detail—down to the texture of fur, feathers, and petals—is designed to evoke the tactile realism and symbolic richness of 17th-century still-life art.
In Still Life and Game I, Robb channels the drama and verticality of Weenix’s paintings, with hanging game and cascading flora arranged in perfect harmony. The lifelike quality of the fur and feathers contrasts with the delicate blossoms, creating a vivid exploration of texture and transience.
Still Life and Game II is a tribute to the Dutch fascination with horticulture and trade, with bold tulips and an overflowing bounty of vegetables and fruits. The suspended mallards, rendered with remarkable detail, balance the scene, serving as a reminder of the fleeting nature of life.
In Still Life and Game III, Robb draws on the precision and depth of artists like Willem van Aelst. Hanging fish, delicately arranged fritillary flowers, seashells, and ripe fruit create a composition that feels both lavish and grounded, inviting viewers to reflect on the interplay between abundance and impermanence.
