Jeff Robb’s latest series, Interiors, heralds a significant shift in the artist’s oeuvre, delving deeper into the intersections of space, perception, and cognitive architecture. Renowned for his virtuosic command of lenticular photography and sculptural optical art, Robb now turns his gaze inward, probing the liminal spaces between structure and viewer.

At the heart of Interiors lies a series of meticulously constructed miniature environments. Crafted from balsa wood and various media, these works capture an ineffable tension – spaces that simultaneously evoke infinity and enclosure, the familiar and the alien. As viewers navgate the exhibition, they find themselves ensnared in a fluid dance of perception, the lenticular medium ensuring that each step yields a transformed visual experience.

Robb’s practice here draws clear lineage from minimalism and architectural abstraction, yet pushes beyond into territory uniquely his own. Echoes of Donald Judd’s phenomenological concerns reverberate through the work, while the dynamic forms seem to channel the spirit of Zaha Hadid’s deconstructivist ethos. Yet Interiors transcends mere homage, offering a distinctly contemporary meditation on form and spatial reality.

The series poses profound questions about our navigation of space – be it physical, psychological, or emotional. Robb invites us to interrogate the presumed solidity of our surroundings, encouraging a deeper contemplation of how we construct and interpret the architecture of our perceptions. In doing so, Interiors not only challenges our understanding of space but also nudges us towards a more nuanced grasp of our own cognitive processes.

Through this body of work, Robb cements his position as an artist at the vanguard of perceptual exploration. Interiors stands as a testament to the ongoing potency of optical art in our digital age, proving that the manipulation of physical space and light still holds the power to destabilise and enlighten in equal measure.
